MINIMALISM

Minimalism, like Pop Art, was a reaction against the ostentatiousness of Abstract Expressionism and was also most active during the 1960's. Minimalists stripped their works of all excess form and emotion, and focused primarily on the basic compositional elements of art. Unlike Pop Art, Minimalist artists wanted to bring fine art away from the consumer culture, and directed their audience to find purpose through intellectual contemplation.
