ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

Often regarded as the first authentically American art movement, Abstract Expressionism is a style of painting based not on representation but emotion, specifically the creative and visceral reaction to World War II. Most prolific in the 1940's-1960's, artists working in this style created vivid, spontaneous, and unconventional abstract compositions. They strayed from the regional landscapes and social realism of early American artists, using paint and canvas as vehicles of emotional expression.
