AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISTS

In the late 1800's, American artists who had traveled and studied in Europe began translating the Impressionist style that they saw abroad into their own regional American landscape paintings. Like their French counterparts, these artists sought to express the effects of sunlight on a particular scene and convey a general sense of atmosphere rather than adhering to strict realism. Unlike the French, however, the work of the American Impressionists tended to be more structured and representational.
