THE TAOS SCHOOL

Painters settling in Taos, New Mexico in 1898 founded the first significant art colony in the western region of the United States. The first generation of artist's to paint here, artists like Oscar Berninghaus and E. Irving Couse, worked primarily in more realistic, academic styles. The second generation, consisting of Georgia O'Keeffe and Robert Henri, had a broader range of artists and tended to be more modern in style. With the onset of WW II, funding for the colony began to dwindle and eventually the colony was dissolved.
