ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG'S CHOW BAGS - PROVENANCE Collectively, his works represent a life time's testimony of the day-to-day experience in modern cities and culture. Rauschenberg has been referred to as the Father of Pop Art--his appropriation of images from magazines and newspapers, the feeling of domestic design, and the segments of paint in an abstract style mark him as a pivotal figure in art history. In the majority of his works, Rauschenberg incorporates an image commonplace to the modern society. Purina Mills, a familiar image reflective of his time spent in the midwest, is identified by the Checkerboard logo and the Chow brand of feed. In the "Chow Bags" portfolio, Rauschenberg appropriates the individual bags of Chow to create a unique identity for each animal, as well as emphasizing the societal importance of each. Just as Rauschenberg's works are a testament to American culture, The Purina Mills company consists of people from all walks of life and all parts of the country. A true American spirit permeates these works. All additional information is available upon request. |
